Proxmox VPS hosting in Denmark โ€” KVM virtualization in a Danish data center

When buying a VPS server, the technology under the bonnet matters. At GITC, we use Proxmox Virtual Environment as the hypervisor platform for all our VPS servers, and for good reason. This post explains what Proxmox is, why KVM-based virtualisation is superior to older technologies and what it means for you as a customer.

What is Proxmox VE?

Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE) is an open-source server virtualisation platform combining two powerful technologies in one system: KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) for full virtual machines and LXC (Linux Containers) for lightweight containers. Built on Debian Linux, the platform is managed through an intuitive web interface.

Proxmox is neither new nor unproven. Thousands of hosting providers, businesses and data centres worldwide use it, from small managed service providers to large enterprise environments. It is the same technology GITC uses to run our infrastructure and work with daily in our own operations.

Why KVM virtualisation is better than OpenVZ

Many low-cost VPS providers use older virtualisation technologies such as OpenVZ or Virtuozzo because they are resource-efficient and inexpensive to run. There is a trade-off: OpenVZ containers share the host system's kernel, limiting isolation and kernel options and preventing Windows from running.

KVM-based virtualisation, as used by Proxmox, works fundamentally differently. KVM gives you a true virtual machine with dedicated resources, full root access and the ability to install precisely the operating system and kernel you need.

Here are the main differences:

Feature KVM (Proxmox) OpenVZ/Virtuozzo
Isolation Full hardware isolation Kernel shared with host
Operating system Your choice (Linux, Windows, BSD) Linux only
Kernel access Full, including custom kernels Limited to host kernel
Resource guarantee Dedicated vCPU and RAM Can be oversold
Security High โ€“ VM escape is extremely rare Lower โ€“ container escape is possible
Snapshots Full VM snapshot including RAM Limited

That is why every GITC Linux VPS plan, from StarterVPS to BusinessVPS, runs on Proxmox KVM with Intel Xeon Gold processors and DDR4 ECC Registered RAM.

Proxmox HA and Ceph: what they mean for your uptime

One of Proxmox's key benefits in professional hosting is support for High Availability (HA) and Ceph distributed storage.

Proxmox HA means that if a physical host server fails, its virtual machines automatically restart on another cluster node, typically within 60โ€“120 seconds. For you, a physical hardware failure does not necessarily mean prolonged downtime.

Ceph is a distributed storage system spreading data across multiple physical drives and servers. Instead of storing your data on a single drive, it replicates it throughout the cluster. This eliminates storage single points of failure and enables live migration of virtual machines without downtime.

At GITC, we combine Proxmox VE with Ceph-based NVMe SSD storage, delivering high I/O performance, redundant storage without a single point of failure, live migration during planned maintenance and automatic failover for unplanned hardware failures.

Danish data centre and GDPR: why it matters

Whether you run a personal website, an online shop or a business-critical application, knowing where your data is physically stored matters. All GITC servers are hosted in a modern Danish data centre, with concrete benefits.

GDPR compliance: The GDPR requires EU citizens' personal data to be processed in accordance with EU law. Hosting in Denmark, within EU jurisdiction, gives you the strongest legal protection and the simplest route to GDPR compliance. You do not need to worry about data transfer agreements with third countries.

Low latency: Proximity to your users means lower network latency. For a Danish business serving mainly Danish customers, a server in Denmark typically has 5โ€“15 ms less latency than one in Amsterdam or Frankfurt, a difference users can feel.

Data sovereignty: Your data is subject to Danish and EU law, rather than US laws such as the CLOUD Act, which can potentially give US authorities access to data hosted by US providers even on servers physically in Europe.

Danish support: GITC support is available in Danish by email. You communicate with people who understand your context, requirements and legislation, without language barriers or time-zone differences.

What can you use a Proxmox VPS for?

A KVM-based VPS from GITC is extremely flexible. Common uses include:

Web development and production: Host your website, online shop or web application with full control over the server stack, PHP version, web server and database, without shared-hosting restrictions.

Development environments and testing: Start a server for testing and development, install precisely the software you need and take snapshots before deploying changes. With Flex VPS, you pay only for the hours the server is running.

Docker and containerisation: Run Docker, Kubernetes or Podman directly on your VPS with full kernel access and none of the restrictions of shared hosting.

VPN and network infrastructure: Set up your own WireGuard or OpenVPN server, Pi-hole DNS filter or MikroTik CHR instance for network management.

Database servers: Run MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB or Redis as dedicated database servers with full control over configuration and resources.

Backup and file server: Use your VPS as an off-site backup destination with Proxmox Backup Server, rsync or Rclone for cloud storage.

Choose the right VPS plan

GITC offers VPS plans for every need, from StarterVPS for hobby projects and testing to the powerful BusinessVPS for production and high traffic. Every plan runs on Proxmox KVM with NVMe SSD storage in a Danish data centre, using Intel Xeon Gold processors and DDR4 ECC Registered RAM.

Need a Windows server? We also offer Windows VPS hosting with Windows Server 2022 and 2025, also on Proxmox KVM infrastructure.

Have varying needs and want to pay only for what you use? Our Flex VPS offers hourly billing, ideal for developers and test environments.

Frequently asked questions about Proxmox VPS

What is the difference between Proxmox and VMware?
Proxmox is open source and free to use, while VMware is proprietary software with licensing costs. Proxmox uses KVM and LXC, and many benchmarks show higher I/O performance than VMware ESXi. For hosting, Proxmox is the preferred choice among modern providers.

Can I install Proxmox myself on my VPS?
No. Proxmox is the hypervisor running beneath your VPS on the physical host server. You receive a virtual machine (VM) provided by Proxmox but do not manage the Proxmox installation itself. You have full root access to your VM and can install whatever you need inside it.

Does Proxmox VPS support Windows?
Yes. KVM virtualisation supports all operating systems, including Windows Server. GITC offers Windows VPS with Windows Server 2022 and 2025 on the same Proxmox infrastructure.

Is Proxmox VPS suitable for production?
Absolutely. Proxmox with HA and Ceph storage is an enterprise-grade platform used by major hosting providers and businesses worldwide. With GITC's 99.9% uptime SLA and Danish data centre, it is a solid solution for production environments.
